Over the years, me and the ol' man have gotten many nice notes from those of you eyeballin' me from Rt. 5. And since I've been online, we've gotten even more. While I can't put everybody's correspondance up here, I'd at least like to share some of those kind words with the rest of you...

"Traffic, the stress of work, 100 miles from our home in Montgomery County, kids crying in the backseat, the ugliness of Lex Park. That all gets swept
aside as we slow down and take a peek at your latest outfit and activity. As residents of the old Rosecroft house (circa 1649) on Rosecroft Road,
it seems like you have been there forever. As the Ark and the Dove unloaded the first settlers, I can just see them running past the local natives
to see you in your Welcome to the New World outfit. Thank you for providing us with so much happiness."

"My son sent me a picture of Ross with the wheel barrow was glad to see he is back in good ole St. Mary's City I have been keeping up on all his travels
on your web site. Looking forward to seeing him in July no matter what kind of day I am having seeing Ross always makes me feel better. Hope you
have a great day looking forward to hearing from you."

"This is distressing that I lived in SMC from 74 to 95 and never had the pleasure of meeting you! The tragedy probably a result of my moving to the
north end of the county. My good friend Kathy, however, sent me your website. I graduated from SMCM in '78 and worked there and married and left
after 21 years without knowing of your mission. Guess I was at the Oar House instead of the Green Door. I lived for awhile with Mrs. Bowles in Park
Hall (next door to the Oar House), but then that was before you were born. Now I live in Carlinville, IL. Not only did I graduate from dear SMCM,
but I married one of the professors. We moved back to my point of origin. Miss those crabs and the stretch of beach at Pt. Lookout and dinners at
Evans and all the fine hideaways at Pax River. But most of all I miss not meeting you. You sound like a real fine sort of fellow and very versatile.
I was wondering if I put one of your cousins in my garden whether my home owners association would write me a letter. Hmmmm. All my best to you in
your endeavors."

"Dear Ross, I have been a long distance admirer of you for years. I don't get out much as I am usually at the Calvert
Marine Museum swimming and interacting with
the many children who visit me. I was thrilled to find your web site and thank you for linking to the Calvert Marine Museum. I hope that we can get
together this spring for a group photo. I'll come visit you. I've asked the Museum Director, who is writing this for me, if he would bring me and he
said 'yes'. So I hope to see you soon. Cordially," The Otter

"I grew up in St. Inigoes and since Ross has been alive I have been enjoying his carefree outlook on life. I have now moved to Huntsville, AL and although
we have the beautiful Botanical Gardens, it doesn't hold a flame to your garden. I often think about Ross and wonder what pose he will have for the
week. My mom calls to let me know when Ross is back for the spring and lets me know about his changing life. I have always loved Ross and continue
to have the same love for him even though we are hundreds of miles apart. Please send him my love because he has filled my heart with joy so many
times."
"P.S. The website is more than beautiful! I really enjoyed how it was setup...love it!"

"For over thirty years, we have been coming from Fairfax, VA to Ridge, MD every weekend from April to December to get away from hectic uptown and to
enjoy boating and fishing and just doing nothing. In more recent years, we never miss the chance to see what you are up to as we pass through St.
Mary's City. In fact, we were just by there today and wondered when you would be returning from FL. Thank you for the smile you always put on our
faces and the wonderment at your versatility. My personal favorites were the Women's World Soccer goal save that won the game for the US and your
windsurfing! Any chance more photos may appear on your website? Thanks again for counterbalancing the ugly growth going on in the County. We go to
St. Mary's to get away from that stuff!"

"We live in St. Mary’s City south of the college. We have lived there for about 12 years. One of the highlights of our days is driving past
the garden on a summer day and looking out the window to see what you (Ross) are up to. I give the kids advanced notice that we are almost there, so
that
as we pass
they have time to take in the daily activities of Ross. I’ve noticed through the years that you once changed daily and lately have changed weekly.
Is that because your ole man is now retired and doesn’t get up as early to assist you with your movements?"
"My parents (who are from SC) visit here
multiple times a year. They also love you, Ross, and talk about how they would like to make a cousin of you for their neighbor. Would you mind having
a cousin (or brother) in SC? They would also love any ideas on how you are constructed and lessons learned on making
you more realistic with the moving joints. If you find time, Ross, as I know that you will soon be needed on garden duty, write back. We look forward
to seeing you again."
The Millers of St. Mary’s City, MD
"P.S. The family was also discussing that we have never seen your ole man out assisting you with your movements and was wondering if you were able to
get yourself into those positions by yourself or does he assist at midnight?"

"Hello guys! Let me start by joining in with the rest of your admirers that I am so glad that Ross and his family are fine... and just taking a well-earned
vacation. My husband and I moved here from the UK 2 years ago (I'm an MD native, he's a Brit) to St. Mary’s City, and were absolutely delighted
by Ross every time we saw him... now there is a man that can keep you guessing everyday!!"
"Anyway, I used to commute by Ross' place every day, but now just occasionally... and was most disappointed to see him gone... however, disappointment
quickly turned to happiness when my husband spotted your website posted on your lawn. I cannot wait to send this to all of our friends... we have been
telling them about Ross since we moved here. We can't wait to see you when you get back, and thank you also for all the fun you bring to good, old
Route 5!"
All the best and happy haymaking, Cathy and Jason W.

"Hi! My name is Mallory and I do not live in St. Mary's County, but visit often. I am 15 years old and my best friend, Kelly, has a house down there.
Most weekends we spend down there (especially in summer!). We find great amusement in 'Ross', always trying to guess what he will be doing
next! It has become one of our landmarks on our way to Kelly's house. I just visited your website for the first time (after seeing it in Ross's usual
spot) and I was pleased to see all of the pictures. I spent time looking at each one of them and admire your creativity. Thank you for providing
a little amusement to a usually boring drive! Keep up the good work!"

"Hi! I'm Kelly S., I'm 14 years old, I live just outside of Washington DC. My family owns a house on the bay, which we go to most weekends during summer.
Ross is one of the highlights of our trip. We love passing by and seeing what clever thing he is doing next. I went to your wed site for the first
time today,
I loved looking at all the old pictures. I think it is a really cool thing what you are doing! Thanks for making the drive down there a little more enjoyable.
Can't wait to see what you come up with next."
Kelly
"P.S. I think that this summer Ross should get a girl friend, so he is not lonely. Then maybe in the future they could have kids; that would be so cute!!!"

"Hi Mr. Spence and Ross!
We're the McKay kids ( Paula, Laura, Sarah & Gabrielle) and we're your neighbors in St. Inigoes. Mom showed us your website today and we all think
it's really good. We didn’t know your name was Ross! We're so glad to know it now. We've lived in St. Mary's County all our lives (so have mom
and dad) and Ross is one of our favorite things! We've even made special trips so out of town guests could see ya. We sure do love to see what Ross
up to every day when we drive by with mom and dad. We've missed you over the winter...and can't wait until you come back!"
"We were thinking though...don't ya ever get lonely out there by yourself? Is there a Mrs. Ross anywhere in the future? Ha Ha Ha. We love ya Ross!
And Mr. Spence...Thanks for taking good care of Ross! He brings smiles to our faces lots of days!"

"Dear Ross and Keeper of Ross,
My name is Mick and I currently reside in Denver, Colorado.
I lived in Southern Maryland for 12 years prior to moving to Denver in 1999.
I used to work at NESEA and enjoyed seeing Ross daily. Passing the garden
was a highlight of my daily commute.
In these times of terrorist wars and battles for freedom on foreign lands,
it is nice to be able to take a moment to laugh. Thanks for your contribution.
I must confess - late one night while at the Green Door I bumped into Ross
outside while taking a call to nature. We were both a little intoxicated.
(The line for the men's room was pretty long). Standing out in the old corn
field turned parking lot we were talking about the upcoming political changes
to the county and the dread of change overwhelmed me. Who knew the ole' "Drive-In" would become a Lowe's then transform into a cheesy office
building. Frankly, it was one of the more sobering conversations I ever had with a scarecrow.
I developed a unique bond with Ross that night and he talked me into running
for political office and although I was a Republican terribly outnumbered
- I threw my hat into the ring anyway all because of Ross's inspiration.
When I was running for St. Mary's County School Board back in 1994 I know
it was "official" policy that Ross did not support ANY candidate.
But Ross and I went way back - we knew each other from the early Green Door
Days. Well, Ross made a campaign photo contribution to help me raise money
and I am forever grateful.
I haven't heard from Ross since 1994 and wondered often about his words of
wisdom. It is great to hear he is doing well and reaching out to others with
a sincere sense of duty and obligation to keeping us laughing."
Cheers to Ross, Mick - Father of the Future Governor of Colorado

"Thanks so much for posting the website in your yard! I had been wondering
where you disappeared to for the winter (last year, I figured you must have
fallen ill and were recuperating), and now I know that you've been enjoying
sunny winters. I'll look forward to seeing you again in the spring!"

"Hello! My best friend who lives up there in St. Marry's sent me the
link to your web site! I showed it to dad and he thought it was very interesting.
We used to live there and I remember driving home from church and looking
out the car window to see what Ross was wearing that day. Im glad to see that
Ross is still an active gardener, even though hes taking a little vacation
in the sunny state. I don't blame him, I like the warm here in South Carolina.
Just wanted to drop a line or two and say hello. Have a nice day!" Katie,

"We moved to the area last summer and have enjoyed your many poses. We
especially enjoyed the olympics! We were very disappointed when you disappeared
and are now relieved that you are merely on vacation. We hope you enjoy yourself
and look forward to seeing you again soon!" Sincerely,Tricia and

"Dear Ross & Mr. Spence,
Thanks so much for your new website. Nice job! I've often wondered if there
was a photo journal of your yearly antics and fun. Glad to know your history
is documented and that you have a name. And it's nice to know you're enjoying
your time off.
For as long as I can remember I've been looking forward to your creativity as I pass by. It seems like you've been around so much longer than 1992, but your ideas are always fresh and timely. I loved that you hung on when Ivan's winds were blowing and that you were as excited as the rest of us when the electricity returned. Thanks SMECO! It was a hoot to see you caught up in the net... I believe that ole butterfly turned it on you. You were great at last year's Olympics and bike racing along with Lance... hooray. Thanks for the laughs and smiles. It's nice to be able to tell you that so often you've made my day. You bring joy to so many, which I hope in turn brings you happiness and more. God bless you for your efforts and imagination... it's much appreciated.See you in the spring!" Your friend and neighbor in St. Mary's City,Carole

"Hello Ross!
I love seeing you in your garden. You really brighten my day. I drive pass,
sometimes out of my way, just to see what you are doing. I was very happy
to see you in the Webster Field Newsletter and I am sooo glad you have a website.
Thank you very much for making me smile!!!! Keep up the good work." Jen

"I have watched you afar for many years, no-decades. I worried about
your well being when you were kidnapped by college students. And I wondered
where you were each winter. Thank goodness you have a web site now. When I
passed your garden on my way to work and saw your address posted, I couldn't
wait to contact you. Thank you for your humor and warmth over the past years.
Don' take any wooden nickels or maybe-you could?" GK of Rosecroft

"Well-you did it Ross! You're famous all the way out here in California!
No,no,no silly...not California, MD. I'm talking about the real deal, as in
the state of California!!!! Right now, news about you has arrived in Northern
California, but it's just a matter of time before HOLLYWOOD finds out about
you! And that could only mean one thing-you'd become a Movie Star...because
after all, that's what they do in Hollywood, California-THEY MAKE MOVIES!
Oh man, and just think about your very first strut down the red carpet when
you find yourself up for that Academy Award, not to mention the Golden Globe
award as well! Is this exciting or what? Okay, okay-I know these endless possibilities
are a bit much all at once, but hey-no time like the present to get your things
in order for that day when the phone rings and that movie producer says- 'ROSS,
PACK YOUR BAGS...'CAUSE YOUR GOIN' TO HOLLYWOOD!' Yee Ha, isn't life grand?!!!
You da man, Ross-You da man!! YOU GO BOY!" Love, Your Californian

"Dear Ross,
What a treat to meet you, even though it has been via Internet. I have known
your friend, Alan, for quite a long time, and I believe you must benefit from
him being close, though clearly not to the extent he and your neighbors and
just passersby benefit from knowing you and your great attitude. I notice
you do not make any genealogical mentions on your web page - and I do not
wish to offer disturbing thoughts - but, having been a cousin of Alan's for
about 60 years, and having spent many summer or Christmas days with him and
our nearly 100 other "Cuz'es", I can't help but notice some family
resemblance. And, I suspect that you may be more closely associated with Alan
than you realize. This, by all means, is not a negative matter.
Yours is a wonderful web site! I eagerly look forward to gardening aid from you in the Spring." 'Semi-Cousin' Jerry

"I just found out about your Web site, and I was happy to have a way
to contact you and thank you for brightening so many of my days over the years.
As a long-time employee at Webster Field, I've welcomed Ross' announcement
of each Spring and enjoyed his many incarnations. Webster Field has an official
front gate, but, for me, the gate begins where Ross stands. He has greeted
me each day since his birth and has notified me of the approaching Winter.
You've probably heard my 'Aw, shucks' when Ross disappears for the year, and
my 'yipee' when he returns.
No matter what's gone on in my life, my spirits have always been lifted each
time I pass Ross. I appreciate the unique way you've shared your creative
spirit with us down-county workers.
I've always wanted to thank you for making the ride so much more entertaining.
I appreciate it." Mary
"The expressive antics of your scarecrow have always brightend my days. Each time I leave the campus and head home, after a long day at school, I make a point to look over at your garden to see what new position he has taken on. It always seems to make me smile, no matter how tired I am." Thanks again for all the smiles, A Fellow Gardener
"I've enjoyed your garden for the past several years as it's grown and developed. This year in particular, I've loved watching your scarecrow come to 'life.' I work at historical St. Mary's City and have come to look forward to his latest 'antics' as I travel to and from work. Thank you for adding much joy to this hectic, sometimes frustrating world. I wish a long life to your scarecrow and a bountiful harvest to you." Deborah J.
"Just want to tell you how much I appreciated your scarecrow and his many costumes! Recently I visited my son and his family in your area for about six weeks. The lift of spirits and laughs your sense of humor has brought me is unmeasured. I got my sense of humor back because of you after a bad time I was going through. Keep that spirit going. Everyone enjoys him!" Edie M.
"On behalf of the students of St. Mary's College, this is a quick note of appreciation and thanks. Your unrelenting scarecrow brightens our day each time we leave campus! It's refreshing to see such spirit and creativity in the St. Mary's community! Thanks for the smiles!" Justine H. and Keith S.
"We moved to the Greenbrier neighborhood off Hermanville Rd. last August from Towson and ever since then we've enjoyed so much your wonderful scarecrow and his change of pose and costume. Thanks for making the drive to and from work at SMC so interesting and for providing a "point of conversation" for all of us who travel Rt. 5!" Lois, Joe & Mandi S.
"Just a note to let you know how much we enjoy the antics of your 'little man.' Every week we look to see what you've come up with. We drive by everyday on our way to and from work and 'he' makes our day. Of course, the horse is cute too. We got a really good laugh when it was so hot last week and the 'little man' was sitting under an umbrella with a towel over his head! Well, thanks so much for making all our days a little brighter!" Rhiana & Sandy
"We love seeing him every week. We really loved the fishing scene. We have been looking for him for years. We hope these ideas will help you." Your friends, Suzanne B. (age 12) & Kristen C. (age 10)

"Dear Mr. Spence & Ross, I'm writing back again from last year. I am now 10 years old. Every morning I look out the car window to see Ross. I really enjoy seeing him. He brings a smile to my face even if I am already happy. Maybe someday Ross will have a girl friend. I especially like seeing Ross on Halloween and all the other little ghosts." Laura S.
"The scarecrow has fans at NESEA. Thanks for the laughs. It's great!"
I sure do appreciate the kind words and suggestions. If you'd like to send me note or offer any suggestions for 'poses', feel free to send them via the garden-gram.
